What is a beat?
A beat is a loop of sounds that repeats. It is the rhythm underneath every rap song, pop track, and electronic record. Music producers and music creators all over the world build from the same five parts.
The speed of a beat is the BPM (beats per minute). A slow beat might be 75 BPM. A fast one 150 BPM. BPM determines genre before you place a single sound.
What do you need to make a beat?
Most people think you need expensive software. FL Studio and Logic Pro are used by professional music producers — but they cost hundreds of dollars and take weeks to learn. You do not need any of that to start.

How to make a beat
Open the beat maker and follow along as you read.
Pick your speed (BPM)
BPM (beats per minute) controls how fast your beat goes. Set it to 90 BPM — it works for almost everything and feels natural right away. Find the BPM slider before you place a single sound.
Build your drum pattern
The drum pattern is the heartbeat of your beat. In the sequencer, each row is a sound and each column is a step. Start with this — it works in every genre.
Click play. If your head nods — that is a drum beat. Move a kick one step, add an extra snare, remove two hi-hats. These small changes are how music producers develop their sound.
Click any cell to toggle it on or off.
Add a bassline
The bassline makes the beat feel full and heavy. Put a bass note on the same step as your kick drum — they hit together and the beat instantly sounds more powerful. Start on the note C — it works with almost everything. Once that feels good, add a second note one or two steps later.
Add a melody or sample
Pick just 2 to 4 notes and repeat them across the bar. The beat maker comes loaded with drum kits and audio files recorded by professionals. Use them freely — even one piano note on top of your drums changes everything.
Piano plays C–E–G–E. Toggle cells to change the melody.
Fix your levels
Make sure no sound is too loud or too quiet. Trust your ears — if something feels too loud, turn it down. Use this order.
Export your beat
Find the export button in the beat maker, click it, and your beat saves as an audio file you can use anywhere — under a rap verse, in a video, or to share with friends.

Rap beats come down to one rule: the snare has to hit hard. The snare on beats 2 and 4 is what makes someone nod their head. Get that right and everything else falls into place.
Boom-bap tip — Set swing to 60% in the beat maker. It makes hi-hats feel slightly loose and human — exactly like classic hip hop records from the 90s.
How to make a trap beat
Trap beats are built around one sound: the rolling hi-hat. Activate steps 1, 2, 3 — then 5, 6, 7 — then 9, 10, 11 — then 13, 14, 15. Play at 140 BPM and you will recognise it instantly.
Classic trick — Turn off all hi-hats for one bar, then bring them back. That drop and return is one of the best moments in trap beat making.
Tips for making a good beat
The best beats are usually the simplest ones.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you make a beat for beginners?
- Start with a drum pattern — kick on steps 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, hi-hats on every step. Set BPM to 90. Add a bass note on the same step as the kick. That's a beat.
- Can I make a beat for free?
- Yes. Make a Beat is 100% free — no account, no download, no time limit. You get a full sequencer, drum kits, audio files, and an export button.
- How long does it take to make a beat?
- Your first beat might take 20–30 minutes while you learn the controls. Once you know what you are doing, a basic beat takes 5–10 minutes.
- Do I need to know music theory?
- No. You just need to know where to put the kick and the snare. Most beatmakers learned by experimenting, not by studying music.
- What's the difference between a beat and a song?
- A beat is the instrumental — drums, bass, and melody. A song adds vocals and mixing on top.
- What software do beatmakers use?
- Professionals use FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic Pro. Beginners should start free with a browser-based beat maker and move to bigger software once they know the basics.
